Historically, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been one of the top performers of all Major League Baseball franchises. This year, however, presents a slightly more harrowing picture. At the fore of the action are owners, Frank and Jamie McCourt, who are engaged in a bitter divorce proceeding while the team watches mommy and daddy fight with custodial fate hanging in the balance.
According to Forbes, the Dodgers are valued at $727 million, the fourth highest in baseball. Payroll dropped for the third straight year, in part due to General Manager Ned Colletti’s pre-season moves, including losing key pitcher Randy Wolf, with no replacement, and a hot hitting second baseman, Orlando Hudson. Injuries, lack of pitching depth, and spotty hitting have made for a dismal opening month; the result is last place standing in the West Division.
Looming over everyone’s head is the McCourt feud. Jamie seeks $988,845.00 per month for temporary spousal support – Frank offered $150,000.00 plus and 50% of the team. She plans to buy out his interest should she receive a favorable ruling at the trial, which begins August 30th, and will run through the heart of the National League’s pennant race in September. Frank steadfastly states that the team is not for sale. Analysts speculate the team is on the back burner until details are resolved. Lady Justice knows the sanctity of competitive sport tainted by money clamoring is a phenomenon not limited to players, and hopes an amicable settlement can be reached for Blue Crew fans everywhere.
