In August 2007, 75 year-old Anna Maria Torres was pulling out of a driveway at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Placentia when she struck and killed 89 year old, Ms. Jessie Pound, who was walking across that same driveway. Torres originally told police she attended an earlier mass and walked home, then testified that she did not hear, or, feel anything as she drove away… A witness stated he heard Pound’s skull crack, and heard her screaming as the car’s wheels rolled over her and while Torres sped up.
On Thursday, Torres was convicted of: one felony count of hit-and-run causing death; one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter; and, one count of providing false information to a police officer. She also received a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily injury. At her upcoming sentencing in October, Torres could face a maximum prison sentence of 4 years.

Shortly after the death of Anna Nicole Smith’s son, her internist planned to prescribe two sedatives, 300 tablets of methadone, an anti-inflammatory drug and four bottles of a strong painkiller. The pharmacist, however, refused to fill these prescriptions because it was felt that “they are going to kill her” and warned the internist that these drugs equate to “pharmaceutical suicide.”
Unsealed affidavits procured earlier this week have brought these revelations to light, appending the investigation of psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich and internist Sandeep Kapoor, and the role they may have played in her overdose death in February 2007.
The documents also cite sexual contact between the two physicians and Anna Nicole Smith, although Kapoor’s attorney has stated he is openly gay. A preliminary hearing is set for October 5th for Eroshevich, Kapoor, and Howard K. Stern, with her bodyguard and Dannielynn’s father named as witnesses. Lady Justice will keep you informed of the facts as they unfold…

Lady Justice snorted in disgust on August 18 when Lily Burk’s alleged murderer, Charlie Samuel, stood with bowed head as a not guilty plea was entered at L.A. Superior Court. I originally covered this story in August 3rd’s post, “Lady Justice Is Banking on Lily Burk’s Vindication.”
In an effort to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future, L.A. City council member, Grieg Smith, proposed ATMs be programmed with a “duress code” – entering a PIN number in reverse would alert authorities of a robbery in progress. This idea has been around for some time, and the $25 associated with it would initially lead many to endorse it wholeheartedly. Two problems – what if the PIN is a palindrome (6776, for example)? Also, would a person under duress – say, at gunpoint – be able to quickly reverse those digits?
