I just left the Los Angeles Criminal Justice Center where I watched the arraignment of Howard K. Stern and two of the late Anna Nicole Smith’s doctors. They’ve each been charged with felony conspiracy to furnish drugs to Smith and prescribing, administering or dispensing a controlled substance to an addict. Surrounded by more than a dozen lawyers, they pled not guilty to the charges brought against them. The Commissioner took a recess to consult with the Coordinator for long-cause matters because, according to Stern’s attorneys, the preliminary hearing alone is anticipated to last two weeks. Usually preliminary hearings can last an hour up to one day. The long-cause coordinator approved the matter and the preliminary hearing is set for June 8 in Department 102.
More details on this to come later today.

John Demjanjuk may have just taken the last flight of his life. Monday evening, the 89 year old retired Cleveland auto worker boarded a plane for a Munich prison, where an arrest warrant implicates him as an accessory to 29,000 murders as a Nazi death camp guard. The infirmed Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk and his family denies Germany’s accusations, saying he was held by the Germans solely as a Soviet prisoner of war.
Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center said Demjanjuk deserves to be punished and that this will probably be the last trial of someone accused of Nazi war crimes.
Demjanjuk will be brought before a judge and formally charged this week. We trust Lady Justice is now sharpening her sword deep in the Rhineland.

SANTA BARBARA FIRE UPDATE: Investigators have traced the blaze’s beginning to power tools used to clear vegetation along the Jesusita Trail in the foothills above the city. As of today, 70% containment has been reached, and thousands returned to their homes after mass evacuations.
I again express my gratitude to the courageous firefighters who risked life and limb amidst swirling winds to quench this devastating display from Mother Nature.

A Palmdale sheriff’s deputy investigating a burglary wounded a 15-year-old boy last night. According to reports, the boy, equipped with a black squirt gun, was playing cops and robbers with friends and was shot when he refused to lower it after twice receiving a warning. The boy is expected to fully recover.
A thought: how many 15-year-olds do you know who still play “cops and robbers” with squirt guns?

The European Union has never enjoyed a singular officiating figure dating back to its official formation in 1993. This isn’t to say that leadership is completely absent, as the President of the European Council post is an unofficial low-key, rotating 6 month term among the EUs 27 member states. Under the proposed Treaty of Lisbon, this system would be replaced by a permanent two and a half year post. If the new treaty is agreed, the first permanent President of the European Union will be appointed this year.
The exact nature of the new post is uncertain, no formal powers are granted and its relationship with other major posts is unclear. Its influence and role will largely be decided by the nature of the first person to occupy the post.
The American media seems to be void of concern about the EU and its effect on our once mighty dollar, so we should be paying closer attention. Timothy Woods shares my thoughts regarding the viability of England’s ex-prime minister Tony Blair as a candidate:
