Making the Case for Tony Blair

The European Union has never enjoyed a singular officiating figure dating back to its official formation in 1993. This isn’t to say that leadership is completely absent, as the President of the European Council post is an unofficial low-key, rotating 6 month term among the EUs 27 member states. Under the proposed Treaty of Lisbon, this system would be replaced by a permanent two and a half year post. If the new treaty is agreed, the first permanent President of the European Union will be appointed this year.

The exact nature of the new post is uncertain, no formal powers are granted and its relationship with other major posts is unclear. Its influence and role will largely be decided by the nature of the first person to occupy the post.

The American media seems to be void of concern about the EU and its effect on our once mighty dollar, so we should be paying closer attention.  Timothy Woods shares my thoughts regarding the viability of England’s ex-prime minister Tony Blair as a candidate:

Tony Blair has always demonstrated that
he is a true friend of the USA….To
have him occupy the post would, i think, be a good and comfortable
thing…i am sure the USA would give
him an ample amount of support…..

Yes, Tony Blair would be the best, I can think of no one better. (And if we call him President TB it will be out of affection, just as our president is BO (BO not for body odor and and tb
    not for tuberculosis).
—So I second the nomination for Tony Blair.

How about John Major? What is he up to these days? Or, Chris Patten, anyone?
